The Closest Thing You Neglect
There is a reflection shared by people of wisdom:
A student once sat with his teacher and asked, “Why do I feel empty, even when I have so much?”
The teacher asked him, “What do you need the most to live?”
“Air,” the student replied.
“And where is it?” “Everywhere… it surrounds us.”
“What comes after that?”
“Water.” “And where do you find it?” “In rivers, wells… not everywhere like air.”
“And after water?”
“Food.” “Less frequent still,” the teacher said.
Then he asked:
“What about your life itself?”
“My heart… my blood,” the student answered.
The teacher placed his hand on his chest and said:
“Allah has placed everything according to your need.”
“Air — because you need it every moment — is all around you. Water — because you need it often — is near you. Food — because you need it daily — is made available with effort.”
Then he paused.
“But your īmān… your nūr… That which connects you to Allah…”
“It is placed inside your heart.”
“Because it is the most essential of all.”
The student lowered his gaze.
The teacher continued:
“You run after what is far… but neglect what is closest to you.”
“Protect your heart. Purify it. Clean it from pride, jealousy. Fill it with dhikr, sincerity, and love for Allah. Because if it is right, everything else will fall into place.”
“In the body there is a piece of flesh; if it is sound, the whole body is sound… it is the heart.”
— Reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim
The most important thing in your life is not far away — it is within you.
